We have adopted minimum standards to demonstrate our absolute and unwavering commitment to the physical safety and spiritual growth of all our children and youth. Below is an abridged version of the Safe Sanctuaries policy for First United Methodist Church of Sylva, NC.

  • The “Two-Adult Rule.” No fewer than two (2) adults shall be present during any church-sponsored program, event, or ministry involving children or youth.
  • There should be a maximum ratio of ten (10) children or youth for every adult.
  • Open Doors: Classroom doors not having a window shall remain fully open during all aspects of an activity involving children or youth.

  • We will make every effort to have CPR/First Aid-trained persons in place when children and/or youth are present for church activities.
  • Any violation of any law, whether civil or criminal, is strictly prohibited and is grounds for immediate suspension from youth activities.
  • We should always strive to provide a positive and nurturing atmosphere. Appropriate language, conduct, & clothing are expected from all adults working with children and youth.
  • Any suspected or reported case of abuse should be reported immediately to the Senior Pastor.
  • Any adult wishing to work with youth or children should contact the Director of Youth Ministries to apply. This process may include but is not limited to: an application, interview, committee review and criminal background check. Should this person be approved to work with youth/children, he/she will need to undergo necessary volunteer training, Safe Sanctuaries training, and CPR certification as soon as possible.
